The nomination

Category 31 — Best Goth Band

Ockham's Razor was nominated in Category 31 — Best Goth Band at the 2003 Rock City News 20th Anniversary Music Awards. The awards, known to Los Angeles readers as “The Rockies”, marked twenty years of Rock City News and brought the city's scene together for a single long night in Hollywood.

The nomination placed the band alongside the darkwave and goth acts the members had grown up with, and it recognised the work they had done across Los Angeles and the surrounding areas during 2003: club dates at The Garage and The Gig, the S.W.R.E weekend in Ontario, and a live set on the awards bill itself.

Ockham's Razor did not simply attend the ceremony — the band performed. Their set went on at 2:00 AM, deep into a night that ran from 8:00 PM until 3:00 AM.

How the vote worked

Voting in the 2003 awards

At the time, the public vote for The Rockies was run by e-mail. Fans who wanted to support Ockham's Razor in Category 31 — Best Goth Band sent a message to webmaster@rockcitynews.com with the subject line “2003 Rock City News Awards”, and their vote was counted for the 2003 awards.

That was the whole process: no account, no web form, no registration. A single e-mail with the correct subject line was the ballot.

What the nomination represents

The Rockies nomination is one of the two things that defined Ockham's Razor's 2003 outside of the record itself — the other being the band's run of live dates across Los Angeles and Ontario. It came at a point when the band had a debut album out on Midnight Magic Records, a limited edition “Disturbed” mini-disc single pressed in a run of one hundred numbered copies, and a live show built around the marriage of electronic technology and acoustic instruments.

Keeping the record of the nomination here, alongside the performance history and the music, is the most honest way to present it: as something that happened, was documented at the time, and remains part of the band's story.
